1. HANDLING AND STORAGE:
The materials should be stored indoors in a dry place away from water. MGO BOARDS® must be stored on the original pallets; do not store on strip shims or place them upright against a wall. When handling, always keep the boards in upright position (edgeways).
2. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
2.1 Outdoor environmental conditions: When applying the filler and finishing coat, the environmental temperature should be between 5° C and 40° C, with relative humidity under 80%; these conditions should be maintained for 48 hours after application. Never apply a finishing coat to MGO BOARDS® if they are damp; ensure that they are perfectly dry before application. The filler and finishing material should be protected from weather agents until perfectly cured and hard.
2.2 Indoor environmental conditions: If the boards are used in indoor environments, the environmental conditions indicated by 2.1 should be maintained throughout installation, including during assembly of the boards, and for 48 hours after applying the finishing coat. If the environmental conditions are not satisfactory, heat and ventilate the room to ensure the above conditions.
3. SUPPORT STRUCTURES:
The thicknesses and sizes of steel structures should be calculated for the specific type of application; all the elements of the metal frame should be highly resistant to corrosion.
4. FIXING MEANS:
Use the Akifix stainless steel fix means distributed by ITP s.r.l. or Akifx S.p.A. (blocks) or fixing means with salt spray test resistance of 1,000 hours (screws).
5. FINISHING PROFILES:
Use the PVC Akifix finishing profiles and frames distributed by ITP s.r.l. or Akifx S.p.A. which are highly resistant to alkali.
6. EXPANSION JOINTS:
Use the PVC Akifix expansion joint covers with flexible internal core which are highly resistant to alkali distributed by ITP s.r.l. or Akifx S.p.A.
7. REINFORCEMENT TAPE FOR JOINTS AND REINFORCEMENT MESH:
Use the Starmesh finishing reinforcement tapes for joints and reinforcement mesh distributed by ITP s.r.l. or Akifx S.p.A in alkali-resistant fibreglass. Alkali-resistant selfadhesive reinforcement mesh for joints: roll width 100 mm x 46 ml. Reinforcement mesh for outdoor finishing in alkali-resistant fibreglass; mesh 50×40 mm, grammage 160 g/sq.m., roll width 1.000 mm x 50 ml, minimum tensile strength load 15 Kg/sq.m.
8. REINFORCED LIGHTWEIGHT OXIDE BOARDS WITH FIBREGLASS MESH:
Use MGO BOARDS® with thickness of 12.5 mm; dimensions 1,200×2,000 mm or 1,200×2,300 mm consisting of calcium, silicon, aluminium magnesium or lightweight aggregate oxides, reinforced on two surfaces with fibreglass mesh.
9. FILLER FOR JOINTS AND FINISHING COAT:
Use cement-based MGO Filler Dry with single-component resin additive. Apply as filler on joints, or use as finishing coat and fixing agent for reinforcement mesh to prevent damage caused by structural settlement or thermal expansion. Follow the instructions on the product datasheet.
10. INSTALLATION OF METAL FRAMEWORKS:
Metal frames should be dimensioned and installed in accordance with the executive project supplied by the Works Management. All the profiles on which MGO BOARDS® are secured must be perfectly aligned, the structures should support the specified load conditions and wind pressure without bending. The width of the metal support structure of the board should be at least 50 mm. Structures should be positioned at a centre distance of between 400 and 600 mm according to the application in question. If expansion joints are present, the adjacent structures should be interrupted so as to ensure proper functioning. The transverse joint of the boards should in any case always be installed close to an upright.
11. INSTALLATION OF THE MGO BOARDS®:
Install the MGO BOARDS® horizontally when fixing on profiles positioned vertically (namely with the long sides of the boards perpendicular to the support profiles), staggering the joints, with the rough surface facing outwards. Leave a space of 3 /4 mm between the edges of the boards, that will later be filled when the first finishing coat is applied.
Fix the boards onto the structure with Akifix JY screws which have a salt spray test resistance of 1,000 hours, positioned at a centre distance of no more than 200 mm in proximity of the support structure. The screws should be fixed at no less than 10 mm from the edges of the board. Place a waterproofing vapour-transpiring membrane on the internal surface of the board, overlapping the joints.
12. INSTALLATION OF THE FINISHING PROFILES:
Screw in the PVC finishing profiles with the same type of screws used for the boards at a centre distance of no more than 400 mm. The finishing profiles should be securely fixed and perfectly aligned.
13. INSTALLATION OF THE EXPANSION JOINTS:
Joints should be installed at intervals of 6 m; the joints should also be installed in the following cases:
– in proximity of the expansion joints of a building
– in proximity of floor divisions of prefabricated or metal buildings
– when materials of the structure or facing of the building are changed. In proximity of expansion joints it is in any case necessary to interrupt the frame of the metal support. In order to ensure the efficiency of the joint, there should be no finishing or coating material in the cavity of the joint cover. Rigid expansion joints may not be used.
14. FINISHING THE JOINTS WITH MGO FILLER DRY:
Ensure that all the screws are flush to the board and that there is no dirt, dust, oil or other residues on the boards that may prevent the adhesion of the filler. Apply the Starmesh fibreglass self-adhesive reinforcement mesh in proximity of the joints between the boards, centring it correctly over the joint. Apply the joint with a spatula, filling the space between the board joints completely. Repeat the same treatment on edge beams, expansion joints (leaving the cavity empty), and finishing profiles. Apply the filler on the heads of screws covering them completely. Remove excess material, then allow to cure for at 24 hours. The temperature during application must be between +5°C and +40°C with relative humidity under 80%. Do not add any type of additive to the mixture.
15. FINISHING THE BOARDS WITH MGO FILLER DRY:
Before applying the finishing coat wait at least 24 hours after applying the filler to the joints. Use a spatula to apply the finishing mixture by hand over the full surface of the board for a thickness of 3 mm. Bury the Starmesh fibreglass reinforcement mesh in the finishing mixture that has just been applied; overlap the edges of the mesh by at least 100 mm. Smooth the surface removing excess material and allow to cure for at least 24 hours. After 24 hours, a second finishing coat may be applied to obtain a smooth uniform surface that hides the joints between the boards. Before applying any other type of finish, allow the finishing filler to dry and harden for at least 48 hours.
The finished thickness should be at least 3 mm. The temperature during application and for 48 hours after application should be between +5°C and +40°C with relative humidity of 80%. Do not add any type of additive to the mixture.
16. FINISHING THE SURFACE:
Apply a 1.2/1.5 mm acryl-siloxane based coating after applying a pigmented liquid primer. The material should be guaranteed by the manufacturer for use on this specific type of support.
